Summer dinner theatre interns

Each spring, 草莓视频APP Summer Dinner Theatre accepts applications for internships for our summer season. Applicants must have at least one year of college or equivalent experience in the area for which they apply; and be 18 years of age or older. All interns have a mentor who is a professional in their field. Three (3) academic credits can be earned for the internship. See detailed information about each internship below.

The internship program begins in mid-May and ends approximately one week after the final show.

Internship Pay
Internships are paid–you will earn approximately $3,000 for the summer. All interns (both credit and noncredit) receive the stipend.  Scholarships are available to cover tuition cost - more information will be provided at the start of the program.

Intern Opportunities and Information

3 Academic credits + Stipend | 2 Positions Available

Lead the way on one of our two shows as an Assistant Choreographer while being mentored by a professional local choreographer. This internship offers budding professionals a chance to work in a fast paced theatre environment and work closely with your mentor to build connections, learn and practice leadership skills, and to teach and drill choreography with actors. Each Assistant Choreographer intern will be given at least one song to choreograph in the show they are assigned.

Assistant Choreographers for the June show will lend a hand on the July show as needed, gaining valuable variety. The Assistant Choreographer for the July show will largely be focused on their own show’s process throughout the summer. Assistant Choreographers may be asked to swing onstage for one or both shows if necessary.


Requirements:
A candidate for this internship should have a dance and musical theatre performance background, have good communication skills, and a strong desire to learn about choreographing large scale musicals. 

All interns will convene to discuss the process with other interns in a weekly Leadership Circle. Together, they will troubleshoot, build observational and organizational skills, and develop best practices to serve the needs of each show and departments.  

All interns are required to have a minimum of one year of college or equivalent experience and be 18 years of age or older.

Interns in this position should expect to:

  • Work with your choreographer to learn the dances before rehearsal and then assist in teaching the dance during rehearsals
  • Drill dances as needed during rehearsals
  • Be available to meet dancers before rehearsal to help go over choreography
  • Take notes for your choreographer during rehearsals and their absences
  • Coming to auditions and callbacks, if available, to help teach the combo for dance auditions (May 8-12)
  • Ensure good communication between the choreographer and all other departments
  • Attend tech and shows to help support your show and directorial team
  • Be available and able to swing onstage if actors are out during the run of the show
  • Assistant Choreographer Interns will be given at least one song to choreograph and develop

Hours: Rehearsals on Mon - Fri are generally from 6pm -10pm. Sat & Sun rehearsals are 5 hours, starting and ending anywhere between 10am to 6pm. Expect to arrive early and stay later for prep work and directorial meetings as needed.

Be at the forefront of our Summer Dinner Theatre’s Costume Shop for our two summer musicals as a Costume Assistant while being mentored by professional local Costume Designers and Costume Shop Manager. This internship offers developing professionals a chance to work with professional costume designers and a shop manager.  You will help build and alter costumes for both shows, function as wardrobe lead for one of our two shows, and maintain a costume shop in a fast paced theatre environment.

Requirements:
A candidate for this internship should have basic sewing skills, by hand and with a machine. Candidates should be willing to learn new skills as necessary for building and altering pieces, and work with a team to run wardrobe for one or both shows.

All interns will convene to discuss the process with other interns in a weekly Leadership Circle. Together, they will troubleshoot, build observational and organizational skills, and develop best practices to serve the needs of each show and department. 

All interns are required to have a minimum of one year of college or equivalent experience and be 18 years of age or older

Interns in this position should expect to:

  • Assist Costume Shop Manager in managing and maintaining the costume shop
  • Learn and apply sewing and fabricating techniques in the theatrical style. This may include: taking measurements, draping, pattern drafting, cutting, fitting, altering, wig styling, make up, and more.
  • Teach interested members from SDT’s tech cohort basics in sewing
  • Coordinate with the costume shop manager, costume designer, and stage management to schedule fittings
  • Attend all production meetings
  • Ensure good communication between the costume shop and all other departments
  • Create the paperwork for the show
  • Work backstage and help run the wardrobe team during both shows
  • Troubleshoot any costume malfunctions that occur during the show
  • Help pull pieces from other local theatres and tracking where each piece came from

Start Date: May 18
End Date: Aug 7

Hours: Work hours are determined by the costume shop manager, based on the needs of the production. Generally work hours are mid day to early evening. During tech and performances hours will be determined by needs of the production.

3 Academic credits + Stipend | 2 Positions Available

Come take the lead on one of our two shows as an Assistant Director while being mentored by a professional local director. This internship offers budding professionals a chance to work in a fast paced theatre environment and work closely with a Director/Mentor to build connections, learn and practice leadership, and to coach and drill blocking with actors. Each Assistant Director Intern will be given at least one scene to direct in their show. 

Assistant Directors for the June show will lend a hand on the July show as needed, gaining valuable variety. The AD for the July show will largely be focused on their own show’s progress throughout the summer.

Requirements:
A candidate for this internship should have experience directing musical theatre, have good communication and notetaking skills, and a strong desire to learn about directing large scale musicals. 

All interns will convene weekly to discuss the process in a Leadership Circle. Together, they will troubleshoot, build observational and organizational skills, and develop best practices to serve the needs of each show and department. 

All interns are required to have a minimum of one year of college or equivalent experience and be 18 years of age or older.

Interns in this position should expect to: 

  • Assist in the creation and coordination of the rehearsal schedules
  • Support the directors at the casting session for Summer Dinner Theatre.
  • Serve as Dramaturge for your production as asked by director
  • Work with actors on memorization of lines and blocking
  • Coach actors on scenes as assigned.
  • Stand in for actors in rehearsals if they  have a schedule conflict.
  • Attend production, design or department meetings as scheduled
  • Take notes for the Director(s) during run-through, technical and dress rehearsals
  • Assist the Stage Manager and Assistant Choreographer in setting up and running rehearsals
  • Take notes for the Director during rehearsals
  • Facilitate and support good communication between the director and all other departments
  • Assistant Directing Interns will be given at least one scene to stage and develop

Come take charge on our two summer musicals as a Lighting Assistant and Board Op while being mentored by a professional local Lighting Designer. This internship offers budding professionals a chance to work in a fast paced theatre environment, and work closely with a Lighting Designer/Mentor to build connections, learn and practice leadership, help teach our tech cohort how to hang and focus lights, and assist our lighting designer in building cues for the show.

Requirements:
A candidate for this internship should have prior experience as a master electrician and with lighting instruments; and good communication and problem solving skills. 

All interns will convene to discuss the process with other interns in a weekly Leadership Circle. Together, they will troubleshoot, build observational and organizational skills, and develop best practices to serve the needs of each show and department. 

All interns are required to have a minimum of one year of college or equivalent experience and be 18 years of age or older.

Interns in this position should expect to: 

  • Help train students in the programming and running of the light board and in the operation of follow spots
  • Serve as the board operator for both productions
  • Serve as the Master Electrician for both productions while supervising students in light hang and focus, and strikes
  • Maintain the lighting inventory and any rental packages for the duration of the summer
  • Work with the lighting designer, technical director, and carpenter to rig lights into scenic elements or other practicals as requested
  • Ensure good communication between the lighting designer and all other departments
  • Clean and bench focus lighting instruments prior to hang
  • Change lamps and gels during the run of shows
  • Hang and maintain the lighting in the buffet area
  • Troubleshoot any problems that may arise with lighting instruments during the run of the show
  • Manage the schedule and supervise the spot operator team

Hours: Work hours are determined by the Lighting Designer and the Production Manager, based on the needs of the production. During tech and performances hours will be determined by needs of the production.

Be at the forefront of Properties for our two summer musicals as an Assistant Props Designer and Props Lead while being mentored by a professional local Props Designer. This internship offers up-and-coming professionals a chance to work in a fast paced theatre environment and work closely with your mentor to build connections, learn and practice leadership, and to learn fabricating skills.

Requirements:
A candidate for this internship should have a background in art or crafting, good communication skills, and a strong desire to learn about fabricating and managing props for large scale musicals. 

All interns will convene to discuss the process with other interns in a weekly Leadership Circle. Together, they will troubleshoot, build observational and organizational skills, and develop best practices to serve the needs of each show and department. 

All interns are required to have a minimum of one year of college or equivalent experience and be 18 years of age or older.

Interns in this position should expect to:

  • Attend production meetings and other meetings as scheduled.
  • Work with your fellow interns to achieve successful interdepartmental communication
  • Assist the Stage Managers in providing rehearsal props for both productions.
  • Assist the Props and Scenic Designers in planning and acquiring set dressings and furniture.
  • Lead and manage the props crews for the duration of each production.
  • Maintain the props storage room and the props box and keep these areas organized.
  • Ensure good communication between the props designer and all other departments
  • Set up the prop tables and track all props during the technical rehearsals and performances.
  • Lock up the props after each rehearsal and performance.
  • Assist in the return of all borrowed and/or rented props after each show has closed.

Start Date: May 18
End Date: Aug 7

Hours: Often midday to early evening. Hours will be worked out and agreed upon with your mentors. This intern is expected to be present for weekends for technical rehearsals and performances. During shows you will need to arrive an hour before the house opens, and stay as long as it takes to put away and reset all relevant properties.

Mentors: Prop Designer and Artistic Director

3 Academic credits + Stipend

Take the helm on our two summer musicals as a Sound Assistant and Mixer while being mentored by a professional sound designer. This internship offers budding professionals a chance to work in a fast paced theatre environment and work closely with your Sound Designer/Mentor to build connections, learn and practice leadership, work to EQ the orchestra, and to create and use a book for mixing the show.

Requirements:

A candidate for this internship should have good communication, a background in sound engineering and mixing. Candidates should have some prior understanding of reading music.

All interns will convene weekly to discuss the process with other interns in a weekly Leadership Circle. Together, they will troubleshoot, build observational and organizational skills, and develop best practices to serve the needs of each show and department. 

All interns are required to have a minimum of one year of college or equivalent experience and be 18 years of age or older.

Interns in this position should expect to: 

  • Take inventory of and maintain the company’s sound equipment inventory
  • Assist in installation and maintaining any rented equipment
  • Maintain the sound equipment
  • Teaching any A2’s on the sound team how to handle mics properly
  • Oversee the cleaning and storage of all mics
  • Oversee the proper shut down of the sound board any time it is used
  • Help train students to run the sound system
  • Mix the show for both productions
  • Work with the costume department and actors to ensure efficient and proper use of body microphones
  • Run a sound check before each dress rehearsal and performance
  • Work with the Musical Directors on both shows on orchestra setup and strike
  • Ensure good communication between the sound designer and all other departments
  • Coordinate with the Lighting and Set departments on the placement of any hanging mics or onstage monitors
  • Make sure that all communication systems (headsets, walkie-talkies, and video communications) are in place and operational for technical rehearsals and performances
  • Troubleshoot any sound problems that occur during the performances
  • Attend rehearsals as needed to take note of entrances and exits of all mic’ed characters.
  • Attend sitzprobe to ensure actors mics are properly set up and at the right volume, and take notes for the sound designer of any changes to the score

Mentors: Sound Designer, Artistic Director

3 Academic credits + Stipend | 2 Positions Available

Be at the forefront of one of our two summer musicals as a Stage Manager. This internship offers budding professionals a chance to manage and schedule rehearsals, be responsible for distribution of information, and call the show while working with a professional creative team on putting up a large scale musical in a fast paced theatre environment.

Requirements:
A candidate for this internship should have previous experience with stage management, good communication and organizational skills, and be adaptable. 

All interns will convene to discuss the process with other interns in a weekly Leadership Circle. Together, they will troubleshoot, build observational and organizational skills, and develop best practices to serve the needs of each show and department. 

All interns are required to have a minimum of one year of college or equivalent experience and be 18 years of age or older.

Interns in this position will:

  • Notate blocking for the show their stage managing
  • Coordinate and schedule rehearsals
  • Send out daily calls, rehearsal reports, and show reports each day
  • Create and maintain all other relevant paperwork for the show (props tracking, run sheet, calendars, lines notes, etc.)
  • Keep rehearsal on schedule and call breaks when needed
  • Restore the space after each rehearsal
  • Work with faculty and campus security to have the rehearsal spaces open before rehearsal
  • Supervise and train their assistant stage managers
  • Create and maintain a prompt book
  • Arrange the collection and return of scripts
  • Serve as a conduit of information between all departments
  • Help to gather and disburse information from actors as requested by departments (program bios, any food allergens, or availability for fittings)

While running the show, this intern will:

  • Call the show as designed
  • Give the cast and crew “places” calls as appropriate
  • Work with house management and the company manager to start each show in a timely manner and fill out the show report
  • Note any problems that occur during the show and work to solve them before the next performance.
  • Work with your crew to create pre-show and post-show checklists

Hours: Work hours will be determined based on the needs of the production. Generally, work hours are late afternoon through 10:30 p.m., plus weekends and other (earlier and later) times. Must attend all production meetings, staff meetings, rehearsals, performances and strikes

Mentors: Production Manager, Artistic Director, and Assistant Artistic Director

3 Academic credits + Stipend

Take charge of MC’s SDT season as the Company Manager while being mentored by the Artistic Director. This internship offers emerging professionals a chance to work in a fast paced theatre while working closely with your Artistic Director/mentor to build connections, learn and practice leadership, and to gain experience with theatrical administrative skills.

Requirements:
A candidate for this internship should have  prior experience with leadership and administrative understanding. Candidates should have good communication and conflict resolution skills, good organizational skills, and some experience with Google spreadsheets, Microsoft Excel, Google Docs and Microsoft Word.

All interns will convene to discuss the process with other interns in a weekly Leadership Circle. Together, they will troubleshoot, build observational and organizational skills, and develop best practices to serve the needs of each show and department. 

All interns are required to have a minimum of one year of college or equivalent experience and be 18 years of age or older.

Interns in this position will:

  • Work with the technical and creative teams to distribute important information to the company
  • Get to know the members of the company and help support their needs
  • Work closely with every department on process and product during the course of the summer
  • If available, attend auditions and callbacks to help run them
  • Attend tech and shows to help support the show and company
  • Ensure good communication between the artistic directors office and all other departments
  • Work with the production managers, artistic directors office, and stage managers to ensure all spaces are properly set up and broken down before and after use.
  • Assist in the set up and break down of stage and music director video cameras for the duration of dress rehearsals and runs
  • Work with the artistic directors office to handle the administrative tasks of theatre like registration, cast and crew attendance, house count and voting, organizing the use of spaces, and more.
  • Attend all meetings as scheduled, participating, and taking notes. Upon review by ADs, notes are distributed to admin and production staff
  • Work with the Artistic Directors and Stage Managers to create task lists for each department
  • Create and maintain all contact lists, class rosters, conflict sheets, updates and reports.
  • Assist the AD office in overseeing the management of the crews for each show and possibly assist Production managers as needed
  • Act as a liaison to all areas of production, work closely with all other interns and management.

Expect to arrive early and stay later to check in with all departments before, after, and during rehearsals as needed.

Mentors: Artistic Director and Assistant Artistic Director

Be at the forefront of our two summer musicals as an Assistant Production Manager while being mentored by two Production Managers. This internship offers developing professionals a chance to work in a fast paced theatre environment and work closely with both your Production Managers/mentors to build connections, learn and practice leadership, and to gain experience with theatrical management and technical skills.

Requirements:
A candidate for this internship should have a background in administrative and/or technical skills, have good communication and leadership skills, and be adaptable. Candidates should have some prior experience in leading or teaching groups of students.

All interns will convene to discuss the process with other interns in a weekly Leadership Circle. Together, they will troubleshoot, build observational and organizational skills, and develop best practices to serve the needs of each show and department. 

All interns are required to have a minimum of one year of college or equivalent experience and be 18 years of age or older.

Interns in this position will: 

  • Join the Production Manager for interviews for tech cohort (If available)
  • Work with the Production Managers to schedule and supervise the tech cohort
  • Ensure good communication between the Production Manager, Technical Director and all other departments
  • Attend all production meetings as scheduled.
  • Supervise students in the construction, painting and installation of scenery and props.
  • Help train students on the use of tools.
  • Assist in lighting, sound, costumes and other areas of production, as needed.
  • Assist the Stage Managers and the TD in taping rehearsal spaces and scheduling crew calls for the productions.
  • Assist the TD and SMs in choosing technical crews for the production and creating build schedules for the productions.
  • Assist in supervision of rigging projects.
  • Set up and manage all the backstage areas for technical rehearsals and performances.
  • Assist the SM in managing the crews for each show and will possibly manage all scene changes.
  • Send out work calls for the technical cohort who are not in rehearsal.
